What Are the Options for Buying a Differential or Transfer Case?

When buying a differential there are a few different options which affect the price and build time for the newly ordered unit. Options range from bringing the truck in locally to shipping nationwide with a core charge waived up front. Typically, the price and build time are inversely correlated, meaning the fastest options may have a higher cost than the options with a longer timeline. At National Differential, we have many units built on the shelf and ready to ship while others have a build time that generally spans from 1-14 business days. If you are looking for a more accurate timeline please contact us.

Our most popular option for our customers around the country is to order a new complete differential and send back your old complete differential as a core. The industry standard is to charge the core upfront and refund it upon the cores arrival. At National Differential we do not charge the core upfront but keep a credit card on file and charge it if it exceeds our allotted 30-day period to return your core. For some customers this timeline is tight, and we can be flexible if you effectively communicate with us that you will need a little more time. If you do not have a core to return or know the core is damaged past the point it can be saved, the core will be charged upfront in line with the industry standard.

Another option that is viable for units with a pricey core charge when you know your housing is damaged is to send us your housing and have us fix it. If the unit is bent on an axle tube or has burnt spindle threading, it is likely fixable. Due to the required time and materials, the cost to repair a core could be anywhere from $500-$1000. For units that have a core charge exceeding this amount it may be cheaper than paying an entire core charge. That being said, it generally extends the timeline by anywhere from 1-2 weeks. If you are not sure if your core can be repaired, please contact us.

Many differentials can be built inside the truck on a lift eliminating the cost of removing and installing a new unit. If you are not sure whether this applies to your vehicles differential please contact us. For us to complete a rebuild inside your vehicle we will need you to come to our service center at 225 Main St, Colorado Springs, CO 80911. No matter how far you are, we would love to meet you in person and have the opportunity to service your vehicle. When your vehicle is brought to us, we will always confirm the issue is within the differential before we start. If we don’t see an issue, we will let you know and communicate where we believe the issue is. The symptoms of a differential, driveline, or transmission can often be very similar.

Any of the above options can be chosen depending on your needs including price and timeline. If you have any questions or an additional request please contact us and we will do our best to accommodate. Our team is extremely knowledgeable and committed to remanufacturing the best product available for purchase. As the nation’s leading complete differential supplier National Differential looks forward to serving you and your individual needs.
