Off-Road & 4×4 Gear Swaps

The proper gear ratio is key to your vehicles off road performance and ability.

National Differential specializes in differential gear ratio upgrades designed to improve vehicle performance for serious 4x4 and off-road use. Many off-road enthusiasts install larger tires to gain additional ground clearance, improve approach angles, and help the vehicle handle rough terrain more effectively. While larger tires can greatly improve off-road capability, they also change the way your drivetrain operates.

WHy DO I need to Change My Gear Ratio?

Running oversized tires with stock gears can also place excessive stress on the ring and pinion gears inside the differential. Over time, this added strain can lead to premature wear or complete gear failure. A broken gear set can leave your vehicle disabled on the trail, creating an expensive and time-consuming recovery and repair situation. By installing the correct differential gear ratio for your tire size and driving needs, your vehicle can regain lost power, improve low-speed control, reduce drivetrain stress, and perform the way it was intended both on and off the road. Contact National Differential to discuss the right gear upgrade for your vehicle and keep your drivetrain operating at its highest level of performance.

What vehicles are common?

Some of the most common vehicles that receive differential gear ratio upgrades for off-roading include the Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Gladiator, Toyota Tacoma, Toyota 4Runner, Ford Bronco, Nissan Xterra, Chevrolet Colorado, and full-size trucks like the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado. These vehicles are popular for off-road builds because they have strong 4x4 systems, wide aftermarket support, and are frequently modified with larger tires for added ground clearance and traction. When larger tires are installed, factory gear ratios become too tall, reducing low-end torque and putting extra strain on the drivetrain. Re-gearing restores proper power delivery, improves crawling ability, and helps maintain reliable performance both on and off the trail.

Do I need to be local to Colorado Springs?
No. We ship differentials anywhere in the lower 48 states. You’ll just need a local   shop for installation, or you can install them yourself.

How long does it take?
Timelines range from 1–6 weeks depending on gear swap complexity and your   location. Most local jobs are completed within one business week.

Can I ship in my own axles to be rebuilt?
Yes. If your axles are already removed, we’re happy to rebuild them. This also   eliminates any core charge.

Are the differentials rebuilt in the process?
